[=] Sphynx - Version 1.3 Evaluation Copy! [=]
[ Introduction ]
This copy of Sphynx BBS has been released to the public, for evaluation
Purposes. Please realize that this BBS package is not yet complete. It may
Require Some strange things to make it run! The purpose of releasing this
Free copy of an incomplete BBS package is 1) To Test, and debug, and
2) To let some people see the software, and possibly have some interested
Customers. I thank you for trying this software, and if you do decide to run
This Evaluation copy, PLEASE report any bugs or problems, so I will be sure
To fix them! Suggestions are also more than welcome..
*Please Note*
This evaluation copy will only allow a maximum of 50
Users, until it is registered. This gives You a chance
To "Try Before You Buy" - So you can decide if Sphynx
Is the right software for you...
If you do decide that you would like to register,
Please contact me at the number below, and I will
Be more than happy to answer any questions and
Get you setup with your registered version!
The registration price for Sphynx is
$50, and you will receive your copy
When the money is received. Thanks!
I can be reached at [209]582/1932 Or
[209]585/1466
From 4pm to 11pm Daily.
Pacifc Time Zone!
If you have any problems or questions, PLEASE
Give me a call! I'll be more than willing to help
You figure them out!
[ BackGround ]
The reason that I decided to write Sphynx, is simply this: Because I've
Tried every BBS program I could get my hands on, and was not impressed with
Many of them. I believed that more could be done with a BBS software, and
After Modifying the WWIV v4.11 Source code for a year or two, I decided to
Start from scratch and write my own software, with all of my favorite features
That I'd found in other various BBS programs. Just so you are aware, I am
17 Years old, and I live in Hanford, Ca. My name, in case you didn't know
Is Craig VanGorden, and I have been using computers since the age of 8.
(Yea, a nerd, right? Haha!) Anyway, Sphynx is written and compiled under
Borland's Turbo Basic, version 1.1. In case you are wondering, it includes
No assembler interfaces, and all routines are in pure structured Basic.
Parts of the source code will be released, for use of other programmers,
But the whole BBS package source code will not be released. If you are
Interested in Routines from the BBS, please contact me, and I will do my
best to help you out. If you need to reach me, I can be contacted at the
Numbers that are listed above. Thanks!
[ Registration Information ]
If you decide that you like this software, and would like to register it,
Please contact me at the numbers listed above. Registration will
Be $50, and will include the latest version of Sphynx, and free updates
Of the software. It also includes complete support, given by me. I will
Help you setup your BBS, and if possible, will test it with/for you.
Thank you! And I hope to be hearing from you soon!
* Note *
Please, don't get me wrong - I will offer support to anyone who needs it,
And I will continue to answer questions about the software, unregistered
Or not. I hope to hear from you soon! Please let me know if you do decide
To run the software, it's helpful to know how many people are running
It! Thanks for your support, and I hope to have you as another REGISTERED
Sphynx SysOp very soon!

The system.
■[ Please Note ]■
MBE And FBE Are brought to you by Shannon Weyrick, at The Danger Zone BBS.
[914]297/6651, Sphynx! Alpha Test Site #4. I thank him VERY much for
These great utilities!
[────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────]
Once you are sure you have all the required files, then you may proceed
To run the "INSTALL.BAT" file. It will create the needed directories, and
Will Unzip the "TEXT.ZIP" file into to the text directory used by Sphynx.
[═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════]
■ [ Please Note! ] ■
This section is no longer REQUIRED, but is left in for informational
Purposes. You may now run the "CONFIG.EXE" file, to setup your
Configuration File.
[■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■[ Informational Section ]■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■]
After you have done this, it's time to setup the configuration of your
System. First, you will need to edit the "SPHYNX.CNF" file, and set the
Most important information on your system. The format for "SPHYNX.CNF" is
As Follows:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
com1:2400 <- This Is The Main Baud Rate For Modem
com1:9600 <- This Is The Port Lock Rate For 2400+
AT&C1 <- This Is Your EXTRA Init String
d:\sphynx <- This Is The Directory Your BBS Resides In
SYSTEMPASS <- This Is Your System Password
> <- This Is The String Used When Quoting Msgs
DOSPASS <- This Is The Password Required To Drop To DOS
1200 PASSWORD <- Password Required For 1200 Baud.
No <- Use Matrix Menu (Yes/No)
No <- Lock Port (See Above) (Yes/No)
No <- Use External Chat Pager (Yes/No)
Yes <- Display Free Disk Space (Yes/No)
Yes <- Make Sound When User Connects (Yes/No)
Yes <- Goto Bulletins Menu AutoMatically (Yes/No)
Yes <- Run Batch File "LOGOFF.BAT" After Each Logoff
No <- Exit To DOS After User Logs Off System
60 <- Daily Time Allowed Per User
02:00 <- Time To Run Daily Event (EVENT.BAT) [hh:mm]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Modem Baud Rate]
This is the com port, and baud rate to open and initialize the modem at.
Examples: "com1:2400" "com2:2400" "com1:9600", etc.
[Modem Lock Port Rate]
If you wish to lock your modem port at a certain rate, then put it here.
Examples: "com1:2400" "com2:2400" "com1:9600", etc.
[Modem EXTRA Init String]
If you wish to add anything extra to the Init String, this is where you do
It. Most of the time, you will not need anything here, since Sphynx sends
It's own internal required Init String automatically.
[Sphynx Main Directory]
This is the main directory that Sphynx will run from, please note that there
Should be NO trailing backslash on the end.
[System Password]
This is the system password, please note - Use ALL CAPS.
[Msg Quote String]
This is the string to use when quoting messages.
Example: "> This is part of a quoted message"
The ">" in front of the quote is the message quote string.
[Drop To DOS Password]
This is the password that you will be required to enter when you attempt
To drop to DOS from remote. Please note - Use ALL CAPS.
[1200 Baud Password]
This is the password that 1200 Baud users will be required to enter, in
Order to logon to your BBS. If you wish to allow 1200 baud users logon
Without entering a password, then leave this line blank.
[Matrix Menu (Yes/No)]
If you would like to have a matrix menu displayed upon logon, then set
This option to "Yes", otherwise you will not receive a matrix menu.
Example: "Yes" or "No" are correct, "yes" and "no" are not.
Note the capitalization.
[Lock Port (Yes/No)]
If you wish to lock your port at the baud rate set above, then set this
Option to "Yes". If you do, the communcations link between your modem
And your computer will remain at this rate, no matter what baud rate the
Remote user is at. Otherwise, the rate between your computer and your
Modem will adjust to the rate of the users modem.
This option is usefull for 9600+ modems, but may only be used on 2400
Modems that have MNP error correction. Consult your manual for more
Information on your modem.
[External Chat Pager (Yes/No)]
If you wish to disable the internal SysOp pager, and run the "CHATCALL.BAT"
File, then set this option to "Yes". If you do, you will be able to configure
Your own pager sound, etc. using the "CHATCALL.BAT" file. Otherwise, you
Will hear the pager built into Sphynx.
[Show Free Disk Space (Yes/No)]
If you would like your users to see how much free disk space is available
When they attempt to upload, set this option to "Yes". Otherwise, they will
Not see the amount of free disk space.
[User Alert (Yes/No)]
If you set this option to "Yes", then Sphynx will make a noise when someone
Connects to the BBS. Otherwise, it will not make any noise.
[Goto Bulletins Menu (Yes/No)]
If this option is set to "Yes", then Sphynx will drop the user into the
Bulletins area when logging on. Otherwise, they will go directly to the
Main menu.
[Logoff Batch File (Yes/No)]
If this option is set to "Yes", then Sphynx will shell and load the
"LOGOFF.BAT" file after each user logs off. This is useful for things
Like updating the bulletins for some online games.
[Exit To DOS After Logoff (Yes/No)]
IF this option is set to "Yes", then Sphynx will exit to dos after
Each user logs off, and will not recycle the system. This is useful
For use with front-end mail systems, such as FrontDoor and D'Bridge.
[Daily Time (Int)]
This is the amount of time that you wish each user to have each day on your
System. They will receive this amount of time each day. Once they have used
All of this time, they will not be permitted to logon until the next day.
[Time For Event (hh:mm)]
This is the time that you wish for Sphynx to shell from the BBS, and run
An external event file called "EVENT.BAT". This is usefull for things such
As Online games that may require a maintanance program to be run each day.
Example: "17:30" "02:00" Are valid times.
* Note *
Time is in 24 hr. format.

This section is no longer required, and is included for informational
Purposes only. You may now use "MBE.EXE" (By Shannon Weyrick) to edit
And configure your message base areas.
[■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■[ Informational Section ]■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■]
Now that you have completed the main system configuration, you will need
To start on the "BASES.DAT", "AREAS.DAT" and "BULLS.DAT" files.
These files hold the information on the Message Bases that you wish to use,
The File Areas, and the Bulletins.
[BASES.DAT] - This file contains the following:
1 <- Base Access Number
Sphynx Support <- Name Of Base
SPHYNXS <- Name Of Data File To Use
50 <- Security Level To Access Base
150 <- Maximum # Of Msgs In Base
No <- Netmail Base (Yes/No)
An example of my own BASES.DAT file is as follows:

Once you have setup the message bases that you wish to use, you will need
To do the same thing for the file area. The format is as follows:
[AREAS.DAT] - File Areas
1 <- Area Access Number
New Uploads <- Area Name
NEWUPS <- Area Access File
c:\files\uploads <- Path To Files

Now you will need to create your "BULLS.DAT" file, which contains the
Bulletins that you would like to offer on your system. If you are confused
As to what exactly a "Bulletin" is, it is basically just a text file,
That is offered to the users to read. Simple as that. You may put up
ANSI screens if you want, or you may have scoreboards from online games,
etc. It can be a very usefull and powerfull feature.
[BULLS.DAT] - List of bulletins on your system
1 <- Bulletins Access Number
c:\text\textfile.txt <- FileName And Path Of Text File
A Wonderful Text File <- Description Of Text File
The following is an example of my own BULLS.DAT file:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

2
e:\doors\keno\blt1

4
e:\doors\fish\fishnews.dat

8
e:\doors\overkill\ootop10.asc
Operation Overkill ][ Top 10 [ASCII]
9
e:\doors\camp\camptown.ten
CampTown Horse Racing Top Scores [ASCII]
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next thing you might want to change, is the "SPECIAL.TXT" file,
Which contains a lot of Text for the BBS. Things like what to say
When you enter chat mode, etc. It is in the following format:
[SPECIAL.TXT] - Definable Text
[SysOp Has Shelled To Dos...] <- SysOp Shell To Dos
[SysOp Has Returned From DOS] <- SysOp Return From DOS
[Hi! This Is |s, What's Up?] <- Enter Chat Mode
[Well, |u. Been Nice Talking!] <- Exit Chat Mode
[|s Is Around Here Somewhere] <- SysOp Available For Chat
[|s Is Not Around!] <- SysOp Not Available For Chat
[Another Download? Yeesh!] <- End Of Download Text
[Hey! Thanks For The Upload!] <- End Of Upload Text
[You Session Has Been Termninated!] <- Kickoff/Timeout Text
[Smack A Key] <- Pause Prompt
[═────────────────────────────[Chat-De <- Chat Devider Bar
[Do You Want FullScreen Editor?][Y/n] <- Use FullScreen Editor Y/N
Is This The Name/Handle You Want? [y/N]<- Name Or Handle Verification

[Yaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!] <- Pager - String #2
[Saving Your Msg To Disk...] <- Saving Message Text
[Main Menu](27 Mins Left)[Command]: <- Main Menu Prompt
[Door Menu](26 Mins Left)[Door #]: <- Door Menu Prompt
* Note *
You may use the "Color" and "MCI" codes in this text, refer to
"Colors & MCI Codes" for more information.
The following is an example of my SPECIAL.TXT file:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
|7■[ |6|s |1Is Looking Through The Mess, Hang On Please.. |7]■

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, if you have completed the following, you're done!
1) Read this WHOLE doc file!!
2) Run the "INSTALL.BAT" file successfully
3) Configured your "SPHYNX.CNF" file <- Use CONFIG.EXE
4) Configured your "BASES.DAT" file <- Use MBE .EXE
5) Configured your "AREAS.DAT" file <- Use FBE .EXE
6) Configured your "BULLS.DAT" file
7) Configured your "SPECIAL.TXT" file

[ Command Line Parameters ]
Sphynx! Will allow as many as 99 active nodes, using 99 separate config
Files. If you would like to use this feature, copy your Sphynx.cnf file
Over to whatever node you wish to install.
(Ie, "Copy sphynx.cnf node2.cnf" would be valid for Node2)
Then, load CONFIG.EXE and enter #2 for node to edit. You will then be
Editing the "Node2.cnf" file. You may do this for as many nodes up to 99.
To load another node (Aside from Node1, default) use the command line
Parameter "Nodex" where x=node configuration you want Sphynx to load.
(Ie, "SPHYNX NODE2" would load node #2, and read in Node2.cnf)
(Ie, "SPHYNX NODE26" would load node #26, amd read in Node26.cnf)
[ Ringback Feature ]
A great new feature is now offered in version 1.3 Evaluation! It allows
One to run a BBS on a line dedicated to voice conversations, without
The modem answering all the time! Ringback is a system that is used to
Notify the BBS that someone wishes to contact the modem, and then the
Person calls back and the modem will answer.
To use ringback, the BBS is set for 1 or 2 rings. If it's set for 1 ring,
A person calling to contact the BBS must allows the phone to ring once,
Hang up, and call back. The BBS will not answer at all, unless the specified
Number of rings is counted. (This allows all "Normal" voice calls to come
Through without interferance from the BBS) Although this is an inconvienence
To the BBS users, it saves much money and can even be used to sucessfully
Add a second node to your system without purchasing an additional phone
Line. (Using an existing voice line as an additional node with Ringback)
Loading the BBS for Ringback:
SPHYNX RING1 <- One ring, hangup, call back
SPHYNX RING2 <- Two rings, hangup, call back
SPHYNX NODE2 RING1 <- One ring, hangup, call back - Node #2
SPHYNX NODE76 RING2 <- Two rings, hangup, call back - Node #76
[ The Baudrate Parameters ]
Sphynx may be passed a baudrate to log a user on at, this is used when
The BBS is being loaded from dos with a user online already. Any baudrate
From 300 to 9600 is a valid one.
Loading BBS with baudrate:
SPHYNX 2400
SPHYNX 9600
SPHYNX %1 <- If baudrate is passed as %1
[ The /H Parameter ]
If you are running the BBS from a Matrix Menu, or something similar to
It, FrontDoor, D'Bridge, etc - You may want to use this option. This will
Tell Sphynx not to hang up on the user when he/she exits the system.
This should only be used when the BBS is configured to drop to dos after
User logs off, though.
Using the BBS with /H:
SPHYNX /H
SPHYNX NODE6 /H

[ Getting The BBS Running ]
Now that you have configured your BBS, you are now ready to run it!
[ Creating SysOp Account ]
Once you have successfully loaded the BBS, you will need to press "L",
To logon locally to the BBS. When you reach the Logon Prompt, enter your
Name or Handle exactly as you specified for the "SysOp Name", since this
Is the account that all Feedback will be sent to.
When you have logged into the BBS, and are at the main menu prompt, you
Will need to validate yourself, and give yourself enough security level
To use the SysOp functions. To do this, press your "F1" key, and you will
Be sent into the SysOp Menu, where you can proceed to hit "U". Now you
Will be placed in the User Editor, and can change your security level by
Pressing "E" and entering 99 for the security level. You will now be able
To Access the SysOp Menu by pressing "*" at the main menu, and you will
Be able to drop any user into the SysOp Menu at any time by pressing your
"F1" key.
You are now ready to run your BBS.
* Please Note *
All new users are Automatically given security level 50, so base your
File area and message base access levels according to this.
[ Changing Welcome Screens ]
With the BBS, you have recieved the welcome screens used by Me,
And you will probably want to make your own custom screens.
When you do make your own welcome screens, you will probably want to
Use TheDraw, or ANSIpaint, or something similar. These files are
Available full time for download on my BBS.
The screen formats that you need for each welcome screen are:
".ANS" - This is your color ANSI graphics screen
".ASC" - This is your non-color, non-IBM screen
".SEG" - This is the SEG (Sphynx Enhanced Graphics) format
* Please Note *
The ANSI/ASCII/SEG screens that you will want to modify/change,
Are located in the "TEXT" directory, under the BBS directory.
╓──────────────────────────────╖
║ Section - SysOp Control Keys ║
╙──────────────────────────────╜
The are the F-Keys (Funtion Keys 1-10) that you will use while a user
Is online. They do the following thing:
F1 - Drops To The SysOp Menu At Any Time
F2 - Adds 5 Minutes To The Users Time Left

■ Uploading Files To Your System
When you have defined your system file areas, and have your
Paths and access levels defined, and you would like to add
Files to your system, this is what you do.
If the file is resident on your drive, all you need to do
Is proceed like you were uploading it from remote, and
When you are asked for the protocol to use, the system will
Recognize local mode, and will add the file to the database.
*Multiple Files*
To add multiple files, press the "*" key from the file menu,
The system will prompt you for a file description for each
File it finds in that file area. If you wish to skip a file,
Press [Enter]
■ Changing Message Text, File Descriptions:
If you would like to edit the message text, or file descriptions,
Or any other system file, for that matter, you should use only
Norton Commander. (It is available through me/my BBS). Please
Do not use any other editor to do this, and be VERY careful if
You are attempting to edit system files. You may want to contact
Me at the number(s) listed above for more information.
■ Validating Users While Online
To validate (update a security level) of a user while he/she is
Online, use the F8 SysOp function key. You will then be prompted
With which information you would like to change.
■ Validating Users While Offline
To validate a user when they are not online, you may use the
"X" option from the SysOp menu, or you may run USEREDIT.EXE
That is provided in the SPHYNX13.ZIP/ARJ file.
■ Accessing The SysOp Menu
To access the sysop menu, either press "*" from the main menu,
Or press the F1 SysOp function key. To access it by pressing
"*" from the main menu, you must have a security level of 99.
To access it by pressing F1, any user at any security level
Can be online. Use this option carefully.
That should take care of the basics that you need to run Sphynx BBS...
If this document is not sufficient, once again - PLEASE give me a call
And I will work things out with you! Thanks...
